Rutgers football announces pause due to COVID-19

Rutgers football announced on Friday night that the program is pausing in-person activities due to a “spike in positive tests for COVID-19.”

Spring practice was scheduled to begin next week but that will not be the case now.

The press release stated the following:

“Since returning to campus from Spring Break, Rutgers Football has experienced a spike in positive tests for COVID-19. With the health and safety of our players and staff in mind, the decision has been made to pause all in-person team activities. We will continue to work with our medical experts, and state and local officials to determine next steps.”

Rutgers football was on pause last summer and quarantined after an outbreak within the program. However, they went the entire 2020 season without any issues and were just one of two Big Ten teams to accomplish that. Penn State was the other.

The annual Scarlet-White game was scheduled for May 1 but no word as to whether that will be rescheduled. Head coach Greg Schiano and his staff did not have spring camp last year so being able to have that time this year is critical to the development of the program. We will provide updates as they become available.
